Team Hill Country Bicycle Works places well in The Miles of DisComfort Mountain Bike Marathon Event at Flat Rock Ranch, Comfort TX. January 26, 2008.

The third race of the Hill Country Bicycle Works Mountain Bike State Championship Marathon Series took place on Saturday at Flat Rock Ranch in Comfort, the premier mountain bike course in Texas that has hosted state and national mountain bike events in years past. The state championship series is sponsored by local bike shop Hill Country Bicycle Works and Team HCBW, also sponsored by the local bike shop, placed well in an event attended by Lance Armstrong, 7 time Tour de France winner. Last Monday, Adam Salladin, one of the owners of Hill Country Bicycle Works, took Lance Armstrong on a pre-ride of Flat Rock Ranch. The two of them spent three hours talking about equipment choices, race tactics, football, bike shop news and other assorted topics in the lead up to the two lap, 52 mile mountain bike race. On race day, Salladin showed his strong form by riding right behind Lance until the final 11 miles when Lance quit the race due to cramping brought on by losing too many water bottles on the tough, technical course. Gearing up to do the Leadville 100, the star cyclist on the road admitted that he had a few tricks to learn in order to take on the tougher mountain bike endurance races.

Salladin (Kerrville) ended the day in fourth place overall and 1st in his 40-49 age group with a time of 4:29:58.  It was a phenomenal ride with Adam beating most of the Open Men’s field and all of the other age group racers that were staged ahead of him at the start.

Other notable finishes from Team Hill Country Bicycle Works in the grueling event were Brian Wright (Fredericksburg), 4th Place 50+ Men 6:16:05. Richmond Frasier (Boerne), 4th Place 40-49 Men (4:40:11), and Tammy Killebrew (Austin), 1st Place 40+ Women and 2nd over all women (5:43:46).

Several of the HCBW juniors competed in the Half Marathon, 26 mile race. Luke Allen, age 13, placed 12th and Alex Scott (Rocksprings), age 12, placed 16th in the Men 19-34 age group. Megan Steward (Boerne), age 15, placed 4th in the Women age 19-34 age group. Conor Steward, race age 14 ended the race early due to stomach problems.
